The directorial debut of acclaimed British actor Alan Rickman takes us to the bleak winter landscape of rural Scotland, where we follow the stories of eight unique characters. The recently widowed Frances (Emma Thompson) is debating making a move to Australia to start afresh with her son Alex (Gary Hollywood), until a visit from her mother, Elspeth (Phyllida Law) throws her plans into disarray. In an attempt to console her daughter, she only fuels the fires that surround their prickly relationship and unresolved issues between them come to the surface. Meanwhile, Alex finds himself in the throngs of teen hormones as he becomes obsessed with local tomboy Nita (Arlene Cockburn) and cannot stop thinking about the prospect of losing his virginity. Elsewhere, two young boys, Tom (Sean Biggerstaff) and Sam (Douglas Murphy), are notorious for skiving off school in the neighbourhood, constantly on the look-out for adventure, while two older women, Chloe (Sandra Voe) and Lily (Sheila Reed), continue their regular hobby of going to the funerals of strangers. Eventually, all of their stories tie together in quite a surprising way.

...well acted (with child actors Murphy and Biggerstaff especially winning), sensitively directed and expressively shot (by Seamus McGarvey)…
WH, TimeOut London -
Bearing an eerie resemblence, the real life mother and daughter exploit their natural chemistry and considerable talent in warm performances.
Deborah Young, Variety -
A stark examination of life, death and love, The Winter Guest should be frigid but it has many a welcome flicker of warmth thanks to the great work of Alan Rickman and the finest mother-and-daughter team in movies.

Alan Rickman. The voice. That stare. Few can escape his charisma - but did you know he has also worked behind the camera?
