Detective Leon Zat (Anthony LaPaglia) and his wife Sonja (Kerry Armstrong) are going through some marital troubles. In an attempt to escape this, Leon begins an illicit affair behind his wife's back, pushing Sonja to see councilor Valerie Sommers (Barbara Hershey) to talk about her suspicions of his infidelity. But Valerie's marriage to husband John Know (Geoffrey Rush) is also under strain, with both gradually giving in to a distance that has grown between them. It isn't until Valerie's body is discovered on the roadside one night and Detective Zat is called to investigate that the lives of the two families become dramtically intertwined, leading to many deceitful and intriguing revelations.
