George is a sharp, young Glaswegian with an irrepressible sense of mischief which repeatedly gets him into trouble with his bosses at the bus company. Carla enters his life by fare-dodging on his bus and, captivated by her dark beauty and vulnerability, he pursues her through the streets of Glasgow and eventually catches her. As a relationship starts to gradually form between them, George learns Carla is deeply disturbed by some appalling events in her past. But his irresistible charm and compassion gradually win her trust and he persuades her to go back to Nicaragua with him to confront her former life. Back in her home country, she and George seek out Bradley, a harshly cynical ex-CIA man who takes them back to Carla's village. As they travel through the dusty, wrecked countryside, and eventually re-unite Carla with her family, George is brought face-to-face with the full horrors of the war and the reality of Carla's history.

Preachy but undeniably powerful, Carla's Song is classic Ken Loach agit-prop.

...Caryle is the most convincing spokesman for the film's message of brotherhood and solidarity between peoples. After very different roles in "Riff Raff" and "Trainspotting," he turns in a sensitive, humorous portrait of the free thinking bus driver strong enough to throw away a safe, normal life and follow his heart to the other side of the world.
